Events are on the up and also it seems moving up everyone’s agenda, perhaps driven by the Internet creating the need for businesses and social groups to engage more. The sheer variety of events from exhibitions to festivals and from conferences to corporate hospitality is creating, not just an interest, but also a desire among the working population to get involved, face-to-face.
While most Britons dream of becoming the next JK Rowling or David Beckham, a recent YouGov survey has, nevertheless, found that becoming an Event Organiser tops Ant & Dec’s job and even Amy Winehouse’s. Event Organiser comes in at number five in the most coveted jobs top ten.
The survey revealed that for men, the most-wished for job is to be a sportsman (13%), followed by author and pilot, although 4% yearn to fill Gordon Brown's shoes as Prime Minister. Meanwhile, women appear to have more down-to-earth ambitions. Author tops the female list with 8%, followed by event organiser (6%) and TV presenter, teacher and therapist, with 4% of the votes each.
Group chief executive of the Events Industry Alliance, Trevor Foley says, “organising events is a cross between real business and showbiz, so I’m not surprised with the YouGov findings. It’s a role that can take you around the world, into all sorts of industry sectors and it’s the most attainable of all the jobs mentioned. From zero in just five years there are now 56 Universities in the UK where it is possible to study event management, the first post-grads gained their MAs in the summer and there’s an A Level course planned for September 2008” concludes Foley.
